Mediterranean Coastal Circuit

In 2023, Richard drove his trusty Range Rover to Montpellier in southern France on the Mediterranean coast. On Monday 3rd April, he departed east from La Place des Martyrs de la RĂ©sistance and, taking roads as near to the coast as possible, intends to drive right round the Mediterranean.

As far as can be researched, this has not been done before.

Please note that illness caused the trip to be suspended in May 2023. See below.

Why?

Richard has driven Land Rovers on his farm and Range Rovers on road and farm his whole life. He is a traveller and adventurer with road trips including the Big Sur, The Kings Highway (right) and the Birdsville Track amongst many.
He has visited most of the countries on the trip but hopes see them in a new light as well as enjoy exploring new ones.

"On those shores were the four great empires of the world - the Assyrian, Persian, Greek and Roman. All our religion, almost all our laws, almost all our arts came to us from the shores of the Mediterranean"
Dr Johnson -   arguably the most distinguished
man of letters in English history.

The route

Country by country, the route goes like this: France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Boznia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Gaza Strip, Egypt,  Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain and then back to France. The total distance is in the realms of 10 - 12,000 miles.

Aren't bits of the route dodgy?

Yes. But all things are relative. Gaza City (pictured) used to be a favourite haunt of the rich and famous - Aldous Huxley, Mark Twain et al.

Countries that represent unacceptable risk or borders that cannot be crossed will be bypassed (car in container). This would be the last resort.

All in one go?

That would be nice.
Unfortunately, Richard has health issues and will need to return for tests, scans and possible surgery. His medical crew are very supportive of the trip and are trying to fit hospital visits around good spots to garage the car and get a plane back to the UK.

Return home for "routine" scan.

On 30th April 2023, the trip paused at Gazipasa on the southern Turkish coast - opposite Cyprus. This town has the last airport before Turkey/Syria border. Richard has flown back for a series of tests and consultations which the amazing NHS support crew has bundled into the shortest timespan possible. Depending on test results, Richard will return on the 12th of May to grab the steering wheel and resume the trip.
The car is being looked after by a charming couple, Fevzi and Angelica, who own a Pizzeria alongside which the car is parked.

End of the line ?

In fact the scan result was not as anticipated. The cancer was back, had spread and could not be treated at Salisbury. Richard deployed to University College London Hospital (UCLH) who tried further treatment. During a treatment gap, Richard and Virginia flew back to Turkey and retrieved the Range Rover.
At Christmas 2023, UCLH announced that there was nothing more they could do and so Richard prepared for his death in the spring of 2024.
On the 31st of December, Richard consulted Justin Stebbing, a world authority on cancer. He recommended that tests undertaken by NHS should be checked at Tempus in Chicago.
It turned out that a particular test was flawed and that Richard could be cured, after all.
Richard is still alive, well and recovering on beautiful East Hill Farm.

The car's the star!

The unmodified Range Rover Autobiography hit the road on 5th of March 2012. It joined us, courtesy of W J Joyce (see below), in April 2021. It weighs 3.2 tonnes and is powered by a BMW V8 4.367 litre diesel engine. At departure from Montpellier, the odometer will read just over 92,000 miles meaning that it will pass 100,000 miles during the trip!
